What are dental implants?

Dental implants are long-lasting replacements for one or more lost teeth. They consist of two parts:

Post

The implant post is a specialized material like titanium. This artificial root goes into your jawbone during your procedure in place of the missing tooth's roots. When ready, your Arden Dental Group dentist completes the dental implant’s restoration.

Crown, bridge, or denture

Crowns are imitation teeth that fit on top of the post to complete your dental implant. They look exactly the same as your real teeth, so no one would guess you have a dental implant, and they last for many years. Dental implants can also help keep dentures in place without adhesive or support a bridge.

There's also an abutment — a metal extension on the post that connects the post and restoration. The abutment might be on top of your dental implant or built into it.

Would I need a bone graft for dental implants?

Sometimes a bone graft is necessary to ensure there's enough jawbone to support your implant. That might be the case if you've suffered bone loss in your jaw from periodontal disease or you’ve had a missing tooth for some time.

After they remove your damaged tooth, your dentist can look at your jawbone to see if there's any bone loss. If there is, you might need to get a bone graft before you proceed with dental implants. It involves inserting sections of bone into the jaw that stimulate bone growth and eventually fuse the new bone in place.

Following your bone graft, you need to let it heal before having the post implanted. After implantation the post, you need further healing time to ensure sufficient bone growth before going back for the restoration fitting.
